Elderly individuals are obviously not as agile as they used to be. There are many ways to help make their environment more safe to prevent falls and injury.
Home Safety Checklist
- Adequate exits are available
- Smoke detectors are available and functioning
- Fire extinguishers are available and functioning
- Smoking precautions evaluated
- Has working knowledge of 911 system
- Extension cords are properly used
- Electrical equipment is away from water
- Client area is free from throw rugs
- Client area is free from clutter
- Night light is available for hallway and bathroom
- Stairwells are well lighted
- Water temperature is safe for client use
- Handrails are available in bathroom
- Tub has non-slip surfaces
- Storage and handling of cleaning supplies, oxygen, drugs and other medical equipment are safe and appropriate
- Client has proper footwear
- Siderails are available on bed
- Medications are clearly labeled and properly stored
- Food is properly stored
- Handling of infectious or hazardous waste is safe and sanitary
- Personal hygiene is properly maintained
- Fire Escape Plan has been discussed
